5-HTP—5-hydroxytryptophan

Posted by wilm on June 21, 2001, at 15:39:14

Seeking comment on 5-HTP for depression. Been taking Atenolol 75mg for past 3 months for HBP. Also taking a mild dose of Maxide. Starting to notice signs of depression & fatigue which are known side effects of Beta Blockers like Atenolol. My doc recommends effoxor. I'm hesitant. The threads I've seen lean toward the negative side for side effects & withdrawl problems.

The depression is mild at present, but I have a history of depression & was on tricyclics and then SSRIs for several years. No ADs for past 3.5 years however. Anybody taking 5-HTP? What doses, etc? The literature I've seen indicates some contraindications if HBP is present. But it seems thast Effexor raises BP as well.
