Geodon and Initial Sedation? - Medlib / Anyone

Posted by SLS on June 3, 2001, at 9:42:16

Hi Medlib.

I hope your current absence from posting on PB indicates that you are being kept busy in a life without depression.

I never thanked you for replying to my questions last time, and I have no intention of doing so now. :-)

My doctor decided that he would rather try Effexor than Nardil. At my last visit, he gave me the option of choosing for myself. I had been on the fence about this for about a month between visits. I told him to make believe I didn't know anything (this is really not so far-fetched :-)) and had no preference. He said if that were the case, he would want me to start with Effexor. I asked him if I could try Geodon somewhere in there. While maintaining your anonymity, I described your case to him. I also described some of the adverse effects reported by others here. He gave me a prescription for Geodon 20 b.i.d. and said that I could try it at any point.

I am currently taking Lamictal 300mg and nortriptyline 100mg. My nortriptyline blood level is 123ng/ml. I decided to perform a quick trial of Geodon before beginning Effexor. I still had a few days to complete my 14-day washout period after discontinuing Parnate, so I figured the timing was ideal. I took a single 20mg dose early in the day, anticipating the possibility of experiencing activation and insomnia. Instead, I felt sedated and somnolent. I felt pretty cruddy in general and couldn't wait for it to dissipate. I did not take a second dose.

How did you react to the initial dosing of Geodon? Did you feel sedated or somnolent? If so, how long did it take for these effects to disappear?

At this point, I am inclined to begin taking Effexor and try Geodon later in the trial if necessary. Since you are also taking Effexor, I would look forward to using the same combination. It is something to hope for, anyway.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Sincerely,
Scott
