Xanax and Celexa, *YAWN*

Posted by Cassie on May 2, 2001, at 13:22:44

Hi: I am new to posting and have really gained a lot of info from all your posts here. I am 40 years old and have a panic disorder. I HAD one. I went on Xanax years ago and I have been able to fly, take a cruise, and do things I never dreamed I would be able to do while I was housebound. However, I have been really lethargic and basically haven't wanted to do anything for a while. Probably for years actually. It takes a LOT to get me going and to make me happy. Generally I am just BLAH. I don't care much about anything including housework.

My doctor put me on Celexa (I have been on 10 mg for a week) after many attempts to get me on an SSRI. I tried Paxil but stopped, probably out of fear, years ago. I have never been on any antidepressants for more than 2 days. This is a record for me! I went through the nausea, the headaches which I still get, and now I notice I am so TIRED that I certainly don't want to go anywhere now. Less so than before. Also when I do go out, I notice I am more anxious than I was before. I went to an event that usually is no problem and I nearly had a panic attack and had to take extra Xanax. My doctor says my dose and my time I have been on Celexa makes it nearly impossible for me to be getting more anxious from that. (I do have the "what if" mentality so I MAY have been scared about the meds and talked myself into the anxiety, but I don't know...)

Has anyone else experienced increased anxiety? It isn't all the time, it only happens now and then, but then again, I only have left the house 2 times since I have been on the meds.

And does the tiredness go away? I know Xanax itself makes me tired but this is crazy. I am so tired, I could sleep 17 hours and still be tired. And that's only on 10 mg!!! I do, however take the Celexa at night (midnight) and I stay up very late, sometimes until 4 or 5 a.m. writing, then I am dead the next day (expected). Perhaps taking the Celexa in the am would be better? I am trying to avoid taking the Xanax, my small dose of Thyroid medication, and Celexa together in the morning.

Basically -- I just wondered if side affects go away and when, if ever, I will know if this stuff is going to work. I know I have to go up to 20 mg and eventually 40 but I will be sleeping 24/7 then or worse, panicking again.

I am also really freaked about weight gain. I see some gained weight and some lost. I don't think I am eating more, but weight gain is a huge issue for me. I would rather be unhappy and thin than fat and happy. That sounds awful but it is true. Of course I worry about sexual side affects but so far that has not been an issue (yet).

Basically I want to know how everyone felt when they started and if the side affects they experienced went away and when relief kicked in etc. I am looking to my peers for info because doctors tell you what they want you to know, not always the full truth, in my opinion.

Cry for help here! Any and all responses are so appreciated!!

Cassie
