SSRI's and PARKINSONS DISEASE

Posted by Mr.Scott on April 23, 2001, at 17:05:00

Yeah yeah yeah.. I know it's my unique experience and should not reflect it as being everyones. But I believe SSRI's cause drug induced parkinson's. CLEARLY they make me stiff and sore with tight and flexing muscles, and after probing a bunch of fellow SSRI (Prozac, Zoloft, etc.)users they report the same thing just not having ever associated it with taking the drugs. Add this in to well known side effect of Akathisia and Restlessness (other Movement Disorders), And I don't care what anyone says.. That is Parkinsons like symptoms. Check out Medline (unless the abstract has been suspiciosly removed)..Studies on various SSRI's show that they reduce Dopamine in the Nigra Striatal region of the Brain by about 50%..

I wonder if we're going to see the same problem we saw with Antipsychotic drugs...you know the movement disorders that emerged down the road like 20-30 years post introduction. Or if worse yet these Nigra Striatal neurons are being permanently destroyed...

I am a big fan of drugs, So don't call me a scientologist!! I would like to hear what everyone elses thoughts and experiences are. Maybe these side effects just go away when you stop taking them..I'm currently in my 8th year.
