The answer may have to do with whether or not you are on the right meds or combination of meds.
I have had what felt like a response within a day or two. This was when I was first on a MAO inhibitor many years ago. With the SSRI's it has seemed to take longer.
Sometimes it just never happens or I gave up before the med got to the point where it might have worked. But I don't believe in waiting too long especially when you are in dire straights.
