RE: DO YOU THINK I'M HAVING EFFEXOR WITHDRAWAL

Posted by Diane on March 9, 2001, at 11:40:10

Have been scanning this site and just got registered, so here goes.

Diagnosed in 1990 with clinical depression, put on various combinations of meds (prozac, paxil, effexor, wellbutrin) at different times. My last meds prescribed were 75 mg. of effexor 3 times a day and 150 mg. of Wellbutrin once a day. Spoke with my psychiatrist and told him of my problems...lack of feeling much of anything, no joy, no excitement, no sexual drive. He suggested getting off effexor and going on Wellbutrin only because effexor certainly would be what was causing me the problems I explained. Anyway, stopped taking one of my 75 mg. No problems, but no better. Then he suggested going off effexor completely. Go for a week on one and then after take none, but I increased my Wellbutrin to 150 mg. twice a day. Then I became ill will respiatory (cough/cold) stuff. Then I started to feel extremely nauseous, headache, inability to sleep, etc. It was chalked up to "just a bug" but when I didn't get better I ended up in the hospital for 3 days, with their doing lots of tests, CT scans, MRI's, x-rays, endioscopic procedure (camera down stomach), etc. Bottom line was, they had no idea what was going on and basically said it probably was a virus. After getting out of the hospital 2/23/01 I have still been suffering with intermitant bouts of nausea/headache, etc. I started investigating on the internet and just plugging in all the drugs I was taking or had quit taking and then found this site. Wow. Now to my question. Has anyone been on Effexor for as long as I have been (probably 3 years) and then withdrew to another drug and had similar symptoms? I don't know if I should believe the virus thing or if it is my withdrawal from the drug. Also, anyone taking 300 mg. of Wellbutrin. I read some rather frightening things about seizures, etc. Help. Depression and bad enough but then having to go through all this drug stuff is awful. FYI my depression has never been completely taken care of. I was so hoping that once I started taking meds, I would just become better and the world would be rosey...NOT. I started of with Prozac and moved on from there. Fellow depression suffers, I so much feel for all of you out there struggling with both of these. I'm grateful for any advise. Take care
