Hi Caroline,

Talked with psych yesterday. He is familiar with selegiline. That was the good part. The bad part was that he wants me to increase the Nardil to 75mg from 60mg. I was not happy about that at all. I have gained 30 pounds since last fall. I can't imagine what this will do to my weight. I have severe arthritis from an accident and even though the Nardil helps with the pain, the additional weight counteracts that. Well... yes it is true as he said, "More people die from depression that weight problems", but that is coming from a very thin man (my doc). He is hoping that the additional energy I will get from feeling better will counteract the weight gain. If the additional Nardil does not make me feel better and/or I gain too much weight, he will let me try to wean from Nardil while adding selegiline.

I would like to find out more about selegiline and it's side effects. I was originally given Nardil in 1995 over Parnate because of it being more effective in anxiety.

In addition, my 19 year old son just started taking Nardil after a year of terrible side effects with many SSRI's and anti-psychotics. He is doing so well now, except for some intolerable side effects. He wants to change to selegiline. His appointment will be in two weeks.

I cannot get over the fact that both of us responded poorly to any other group of meds, e.g. tricyclics, ssri's and anticonvulsants. It is most definitely a biochemical problem. But... I still feel there is a physical reason for this that has been overlooked. He also has many of the physical symptoms I had when I was young.

Thanks for your reply,
smdd

> smdd-you should fire your psychiatrist if he/she doesn't know anything about selegeline as an ad.
> i don't know about the difference between mao a and mao b mechanisms, but mao-b such as selegeline is much weaker. it also often doesn't require adherence to the infamous diet. eldepryl (brand) is much better than generic becuz generics' quality varies. i liked eldepryl until it pooped out, but i can't take nardil (had a severe hypertensive incident.)let me know what your p-doc thinks. caroline h.
