I took the GRE pre-ADD diagnosis too, but the test didn't seem to bother me at all. For some reason, I always do really well on those kinds of things -- it must be that hyperfocusing thing. Afterwards, I am a totally useless waste of human flesh; it's as if I used all my concentration and energy for the entire day in those few hours.
What did I do after the GRE? Absolutely nothing! I took it in case I wanted to go to graduate school (I was 24 when I took it and already bored with my job). I had heard that some scholarships/fellowships/graduate assistantships were was based on GRE scores, so I wanted to see if graduate school would even be economically feasible. My husband was already in graduate school at the time, so it would have been difficult for two to go at the same time.
I didn't really have any particular major in mind; I couldn't think of *anything* I found interesting enough to study in such depth. I also never got around to filling out applications...so I pretty much took it for nothing. I don't regret it too much, I did better on it that my husband did and knowing that was well worth the time and money!
I can still sympathize with your situation (4th year PhD student). I can remember well when my husband was working on his dissertation; we *both* suffered! Grad school is a unique form of torture that I never could have imagined had I not seen it close up as I did.
What are you studying? Are you working on the dissertation? I have a slightly used dissertation that I might be able to sell -- I'm fairly sure it was never read.
