I took Paxil for a couple of years and experienced a twenty pound weight gain. I currently take Prozac and Wellbutrin as my AD's. Everyone is different, but for me Prozac did not cause a noticeable weight gain when taken as my only AD nor does the combination of Prozac and Wellbutrin cause a noticeable weight gain for me.
Bottom Line: If Paxil has done well for your symptoms, Prozac might be a good substitute for Paxil since they are both SSRI's. If on the other hand, Paxil took away some of your drive, motivation, and zest for life (as it did in my case) you might want to consider taking Wellbutrin either by itself or in combination with Prozac. Wellbutrin is a dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor and can cause some people to become grumpy and irratable if taken by itself. Therefore, it is sometimes beneficial to combine Wellbutrin with an SSRI (e.g.; Prozac) so as to simultaneously raise serotonin levels.
