John,

This question occasionally comes up on a panic/anxiety board that I visit, and a lengthy discussion about this drug always seems to follow.

I know a man from Holland who takes the extended release formula, and he says he loves it. He has written that the effect literally lasts all day long. If your doctor will prescribe it for you, my understanding is that you can get it off the Internet. I haven't gone that route since most USA doctors don't enough about this drug to prescribe it, and it probably isn't cheap if ordered off the Internet.

My understanding as to why Upjohn didn't get FDA approval of Xanax XR here in the States is because Upjohn either doesn't have the clout of some of the other pharmaceutical companies, or it didn't pursue FDA approval here, deciding instead to concentrate its time and resources developing new medications. I think the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.

I'm in a hurry to get to work, but if after this response you want more info, feel free to email me.

I'm talking 2 hours, and it was time to "run to the water fountain" for another dose! The medicine had a rather nasty "rebound effect" which was NOT comfortable. I have usually discouraged people from choosing that type of benzo for that reason, but an extended-release form could put a whole new light on things.
