Abby, the only antidepressant that is considered acceptable while breast feeding (or pregnant) is Prozac, and even then it is not known whether it is completely safe.
As far as your friend's weight, the breast feeding may actually be the problem. Many women don't drop weight until they STOP breast feeding, because while breast feeding, the body tries to hold onto the fat stores in case (as in caveman days) the food runs out. It's very unfortunate that we can't get our bodies to understand that in America there's always plenty of food around! At 34 months old, I'm sure her child will not suffer any health problems at all if she stops breast feeding. Actually, she will probably have more of a problem with the child NOT wanting to stop breast feeding.
