> I am having a wide variance in my moods from day to day. Some days I feel almost good but other days, like today, I am really down and cry all day for no obvious reason. Is this normal with severe depression? I take 225mgs of Effexor XR, which I have been on for the last 2 months (with lower doses the previous month). Is my medication just not working like it should? Also I cannot sleep at night. I can be really tired, but my mind doesn't quit for hours. My psychologist has prescribed Ambien but doesn't want me to take it every day. Help!

Erinn, I've been taking Effexor-XR 375 mg/day since last December. At times, I still have 'ups and downs' but the downs aren't into the pit of despair, like they used to be, for me. Effexor-XR makes it hard for me to sleep...I take Serzone 75 mg/night to help with this; then I sleep pretty well. Hope this helps!--Cindy W
P.S. talk to your pdoc if you feel you are really having marked mood swings.
