Kytril for SSRI induced sexual dysfunction

Posted by JohnB on April 27, 2000, at 14:35:19

Dont' know if Kytril has been discussed previously on this site. I have no personal experience with it but I found this info I printed out a year or so ago, (sorry - don't have the url).

Adding granisetron (Kytril):

"An especially novel approach appears to be the use of granisetron (Kytril), an antiemetic used to treat chemotherapy-induced nausea, which blocks the 5-HT3 receptor."

"Paul Keck Jr., associate professor of psychiatry and pharmacology and vice chairman of reseach at Univ. of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and colleagues tried granisetron to alleviate sexual dysfunction in a 46-yr-old woman taking 40 mg Prozac daily for premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Patient complained of loss of sexual interest and delay in reaching orgasm."

"The patient was given 1 mg of granisetron and instructed to take it one hour before sex. She tried the drug 3 times, and in all cases, she recovered her sexual interest and was able to achieve orgasm."

However . . . . "the average wholesale cost os a 1-mg tablet is a whopping $42. another 5HT-3 blocker antiemetic is ondansetron (Zofran) might be substituted but still costs about $11 pr 4-mg tablet."

Keck says he will sometime use low-dose Remeron or Serzone (5HT-3 blockers), which many patients find helpful.
