DBryan - Stopping Risperdal suddenly can cause a rebound psychotic episode. The dose should be tapered over a week or two. I am not sure if this effect is enhanced in children. There may be other reasons as well, but I can't think of them at the moment. His doctor may know something I don't.
Ask your son's doctor to elaborate on what he means by "life threatening side effects". I believe it is within your son's right to know. An exacerbation of psychosis can be life threatening.
