Wellbutrin comparison to amphetamines, etc.

Posted by PattyG on April 3, 2000, at 12:13:48

(From the Psychiatric Times)
Commonly used stimulants for ADHD include dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine), methylphenidate (Ritalin), methamphetamine (Desoxyn) and pemoline (Cylert).

There are and have been efficacious drugs for the treatment of ADHD," Sallee said. "Principally, these are stimulant medications. They have been around for more than 30 years, so much is known about their efficacy and safety," he said. "They are joined by medications with less than proven efficacy, but which nonetheless have some degree of substantial documentation, such as tricyclic antidepressants, adrenergic agents, the reuptake inhibitors of norepinephrine and serotonin and the mild reuptake inhibitors of dopamine, such as Wellbutrin [bupropion]."

Questions: (1)What about Adderall? (I guess I thought that was more frequently prescribed than Desoxyn or Cylert)

(2) What are adrenergic agents?

And my main question: (3) What, if any, commonality is there between the amphetamines and Wellbutrin? Would they have the most similar "characteristics" (with particular regard to side effects....i.e. - seizures)?

Would someone get right on this, please?:)
