> I have been on 40 mg Celexa for about 6 months with pretty good results. I'm not what I would consider "normal", but my depression is now controlled enough that I can work and function. However, I am about 100 lbs overweight, and recently visited a Diet Center, where they suggested Diethylpropion (Tenuate) as an appetite suppressant. However, when I told them of my Celexa usage, they told me that I could not use both at the same time. I have gone off the Celexa and been taking the Tenuate for about 10 days, and I am feeling many of the symptoms of my depression returning. Is there any information about taking both of these drugs together? Does anyone have an alternative suggestion? Thanks

Tenuate is actually very similar to Wellbutrin in its molecular structure. Off the top of my head I can't see any problem in combining Tenuate + Celexa. When people try psychostimulants in combination with an SSRI, Tenuate is sometimes the favorite choice, depending on a particular person's response to other alternatives. Combined with the Celexa, you may experience a neutral reaction, a positive reaction, or get worse. There's no way to tell without a personal trial. To err on the side of caution, it would be a good idea to keep doses low at first and increase slowly. Kind of like dipping one's toes in the water before diving in. I could be wrong, but I see little, if any, danger in mixing the two. Just go low and slow to be sure. Sometimes outside organizations, like diet centers, have to be overly cautious to avoid possible lawsuits. They would probably hesitate mixing Tenuate with anything, in my guess.
