> I've been taking Dilantin for mild seizures as well as Cardizem for high blood pressure. The Dilantin for 1.5 years and the Cardizem for 10 years. Recently, my blood pressure has rapidly increased, and I have been experiencing sensations that start with a light headedness and feeling like I'm going to faint, and then followed by very rapid heartbeat. This lasts for about 2 mins. and then it is over. Some days this is repeated several times. I believe it might be caused by the two medications interacting. Have you heard of this before?

Karen - There is an interaction between Dilantin and Cardizem, but the doctor would have adjusted for this when he prescribed Dilantin a year and a half ago. It would be wise to have your blood pressure checked and mention these symptoms to your doctor. Just as a note, the interaction that would occur is that the Dilantin would decrease the amount of Cardizem in the bloodstream. The Dilantin induces (makes more) one of the enzymes CYP-3A4 - for you medical people) that metabolizes Dilantin. Unless your Dilantin dose has changed recently, the chance of it causing an interaction after 1.5 years is unlikely. Maybe your body has changed and you need more (or less) of the Cardizem (or the Dilantin). Best to see your doctor.Good luck-Cam W.
