James here...

In theory the combo of Effexor + Remeron should be excellent combo if one wants to cover all the bases (neurochemically) for depression. Effexor works with 3 NT's and Remeron targets 2 specific 5-HT sites. This combo is considered a big gun, actually more like a shotgun.

For me, Effexor XR is an excellent AD, far better in side effect profile than the non XR. I don't have any side effects on XR and am waiting for summer to see if i sweat more. All AD's cause weight gain so it is more a ? of which one does this the least; for me Effexor does.

I take Remeron 15 mgs at night for excellent sleep. I have been on Remeron since it came out, like 97-98 and Effexor since it came out in 95. Prior to Remeron I took Doxipin for sleep but I find remeron gives less AM sedation (and throughout the day) great sleep and puts me out like a light, does not flatten effect ( the main reason I got off TCA's) and is not anti- colerginic. In general Remeron is a well behaved TCA. As I am an nor-e person I don't find SSRI's do anything.

I take 300 mgs Effexor XR and like I said the XR has many less side effects than just Effexor. However, remember this is Saint James, who can take high doses of meds with little problem, so your milage will vary.
