If I am correct, some of the TCA's and possibly the ssri's might apply. I currently take Lithium and it did wonders for my little fits of rage (do not know what yours are like) which seemed to come out of nowhere. I'm sure others will have suggestions to ad to these. Best of luck and many Blessings,

Some people find atypical antipsychotics (Zyprexa, Risperdal) or anticonvulsants (Depakote, Tegretol, Lamictal) to work as well. If you have ADHD-type frustration intolerance, stimulants (Ritalin etc.) could help.

The above is coming from someone who does not even believe irritability is a part of major depression. Elizabeth, the frontline drugs for rage, anger and irritability are ANTIDEPRESSANTS... got it? The anti-psychotics may take care of your rage but at the same time take away your personality as well, plus it is a good bet where there is rage there is depression or mania of some sort, therefore antidepressants are probably best with anti-convulsants being used when the rage is from mania. Leave the anti-psychotics for the patients who have let there rage get to the point where they have physically done something or are in max security prisons, involuntarily committed and other such extreme scenarios.

In most cases of rage that are not mania related, it is a real good bet that practically ANY antidepressant will relieve rage so long as that antidepressant is working well to begin with. Probably serotonin acting antidepressants would work the best as serotonin has a calming effect on many.

Basically it comes down to this for rage and anger:

If the rage/anger are from depression or anxiety, PTSD, etc. the best bet is serotonin acting antidepressants

If the rage/anger is from mania then obviously mood stabilizers are needed.

If the patient is obviously psychotic, then use anti-psychotics.

Go back and relearn the basics Elizabeth.
