Breggin the question

As far as antipsychotic medications go there are no practical alternatives to conventional drug treatment. Without medication a large portion of moderate to severe schizophrenics would be institutionalized for life, or even worse, left to fend for themselves as the homeless. There is no natural alternative that comes close to being able to deal with this problem. So abandoning these treatments would cause much more problems than it would solve. The medications are not without their problems, some may even cause brain damage or persistent troublesome side effects. But what real choice is there? I would just hope that medical science would keep on refining their medications towards an impossible goal of perfection.
