I know that when I get a migraine, some of the first signs are not pain, but perceptive changes: halos around my peripheral vision, changes in the normal range of sounds around me, lights starting to spherize, etc. When I start to see that, it's Motrin right away, before the pain itself starts. (Once the pain starts, it's way too late to hope to be human for a day or so...)
