> I am following up to my own post, oh well.. I've been on the amitriptyline for 5 days and am feeling pretty down, teary-eyed, ect... Is this normal and will it go away after the meds go into full effect? Why does it take so long for these meds to work? I feel like my Dr. doesn't have time to answer my questions and so I am coming to you all with them. How long does amitriptyline work, as in how many hours does 50mg cover? Why do I have to take it before bed? Why am I having extreme mood-swings? (I didn't when I was taking Verapamil). Will the extreme mood swings go away and if yes, when?

Everybody is different, so aspects of your experience
may be unique. Amitriptyline has a sedative effect
which is why people usually take it at night. If
you are prone to insomnia, this can actually be a
"good" side effect. For me, it also caused a dry
mouth for a while, but it seemed like my body adjusted
after about a month. I noticed my mood lifting in
about 2 weeks, but I hear that for some people it
can take longer.

On the plus side, I didn't get any sexual side
effects from it and it really help stabilize my
moods without causing insomnia/hypomania which I
get from SSRI's. It is an older drug, and not for
everyone I'm sure, but for some people it remains
a good choice even in these days of designer

Talk w/your doc about everything you are feeling.
Hope this helps,
