Here is what a web page ( on Tardive Syndromes briefly says:

Akathisia refers to a feeling of restlessness often accompanied by anxiety. In milder cases, the individual may complain of a sensation of inner restlessness and be unable to sit quietly without fidgeting . In more severe cases, the individual may actually be unable to remain seated and must pace or march around the room. Their sense of anxiety increases if they are unable to move about.

I only recently found out I had this condition when Dr. Bob pointed it out to me. I personally describe it as an odd sensation which is unlike other physical sensations in that it has an intangible quality to it. It is kind of like the feeling one gets when one experiences the pins and needles, or the sensation one experiences just after sprinting a race. Ordinaraily such sensations are tolerable but when they are prolonged and constantly in the forefront of one's awareness, they are unbearable. They are concentrated just beneath the skin and cause extreme restlessness. It is often misdiagnosed as simply anxiety because the feeling is of such a subjective nature. In my case, also accompanied with the restlessness is the feeling: "I just can't stand it!"
