Switching from Zyprexa to Seroquel

Posted by Cathy Nidever on October 22, 1998, at 14:07:04

Dear Toby:

Thanks so much for the input! Ours is the son with Asperger's Syndrome. We finally got the doctor to prescribe Seroquel. Last Saturday night, we took away his nightly dose of Zyprexa (5 mg.) and replaced it with 25 mg. Seroquel. Next day, he took 50 mg. Seroquel, his usual 10 mg. perphenazine, 200 mg. Zoloft, 900 mg. lithium, and 1 mg. Cogentin. We have now cut back the perphenazine to 8 mg. So far, great!! He is calmer and sleeping better. Question: when should the Seroquel be increased? 50 mg. is a very low dose. What are your experiences with Seroquel? It has broken our hearts to see our son so drugged up. Right now, he seems to be doing very well. Of course, this new regimen is only five days old!
It is SO hard to find caring psychiatrists. How I wish we could bring our son to see you. He is only 21 and it has seemed like he has no future because of his mental problems. We have kept the hope that newer medications will come along that will help his brain chemistry without dulling his mental alertness. What do you know about nicotine receptor antagonists? We hear that they will help various neuropsychiatric disorders such as Tourette's (related to Asperger's), OCD, and Bipolar.
Again, thanks for your response to our first post!!
